Why a fireplace plate ?

The oldest known Fireback cast iron, would be the one that exists at the Lorraine Museum (in Nancy), at the King of Anjou's Weapons; according to the information found in the accounts and inventories of the King's Buildings, this plaque was melted around 1460.

The first plates were designed for two purposes:

1 °) To isolate and protect masonry from fire,

2 °) To contain the heat, the cast iron being a very good conductor of heat.

History of firebacks

It was in the 15th century, under the reigns of Charles VIII (1483 - 1498) and Louis XII (1498 - 1515), that the bas-reliefs and moldings that adorn the chimneys appeared.They are mainly cast iron or ceramic.
It is in Saint Germain en Laye, that appear the first plates of royal residences.
French artists produced the most beautiful plates, especially under Louis XIV (1643 - 1715) and Louis XV (1715 - 1774). Although production is more intense in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and the countries of Trier.
Under the Terror, a decree is issued by the Revolutionary Court on 18 Vendemiaire of Year II (9 October 1793). He orders the destruction of the plates bearing all coats of arms. On the 22nd of the same month, a second decree appeared, requiring their owners to return the plates so as to hide the coat of arms that appears on them. Then appear the plates adorned with a Phrygian cap.
Under the Second Empire, art manifests a new power. This time will contribute to the emergence of artisans. Original plates were made for the castles of Compiègne and Pierrefond.

In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance the chimneys were plugged with branches when they were not used.

The screens named "before chimneys" evolved according to the times:

In the 17th century, it was wooden shutters.
In the eighteenth, it could be surmounted by a wooden frame, covered with leather pieces, or tappisserie.
In the nineteenth, it was a metal curtain.

The chimney front is to dissociate from the firewall. This last word designates a panel that protects from sparks.

The flap was placed under the chimney lintel to reduce the height of the opening and prevent smoke from falling back into the room.
