In 1202, the Duchess of Brittany Alix married Duke Pierre de Dreux. At the time, only the eldest child could keep the family crest, the other children had to "break weapons", ie add a break, a distinctive sign. Pierre de Dreux had added to the family coat of arms an ermine mark. This is how the ermine made its appearance in Brittany. The ermine is to the Duke of Brittany what the lily to the King of France, two symbols of purity.

This will give birth to the motto of Brittany: "Rather the death than the defilement" is "Kentoc'h mervel eget bezan saotret" illustrated by a legend which here is one of the versions: The Duchess Anne de Bretagne, during a hunt, saw an ermine, hunted by dogs, preferring to die rather than getting dirty while crossing a muddy pond. Fascinated, the duchess saved her life and made the ermine her emblem.
