The presumptives of the crown of France were called "Dauphin" following the acquisition of Dauphiné by Philip VI of Valois in 1349. Indebted and without heirs, Humbert II, who had the county of modern Dauphiné, had agreed with the king to give him his titles, and at the same time his coat of arms on which figured a dolphin in exchange for a large sum.
